Project 1 - Uyir Mey Ezhuthukkal

 Subject : Tamil

Topic : Uyir-Mey Ezhuthukkal
Description : To convey the Uyir + Mey ezhuthukkal = Uyir Mey Ezhuthukkal in Tamil.

Working : Tamil Uyir ezhuthukkal go as the header fields and mey ezhuthukkal go at the start of each row. There is a movable vertical column for Akhu (the 3 triangular dots) and kk, ngg, chch and so on. You move this vertical strip to the uyir ezhuthu you are interested in to see that the combination of that uyir and mey ezhuthu gives that corresponding uyir mey ezhuthu.

Example : Move the vertical strip to eeee(say) and corresponding to the row that says tttt (ta with a dot) you get 'teee'. Voila! 

Back story : We are proud of our mother tongue. While sure, I'm not as proficient in Tamil ( atleast for the reading and writing part) as I'm in English - Thanks to English medium schooling and our works, ofcourse - my kid learning tamizh was a matter of pride and absolute importance to me. Its about our roots. 

Side Note - We are not the family that gets our son to converse in English at home. I truly believe for now - all he has to do is get confident in his mother tongue and his own skin. Which he is! So when a 'Peter' Tamil family speaks to my son in English, he goes "Neengalum tamizh laye pesalaamae"(Why don't we both speak in tamizh (p.s - because it is our common, local tongue)) and I grin as a proud mama! 

So far - the one comment I had when I saw Arya write Tamizh was - "Ezhudhu daa, kattadam kattaadha". He was drawing patterns and together they resembled tamil letters, but he did not see the whole pattern as a single tamizh letter. This was our very first academic project and I started this (unknowing of all his interest that followed and the many more that we would do down the line) with the sole purpose of making sure he knew to recognize the characters in his mother tongue easily.

 Hello everyone, Welcome to Arya's projects. This is Sandya Arunn, writing for my 6 year old son - Arya Arunn. He is in Grade 1 at Green Valley Kriyalaya school. My son is a curious, fun little soul with loads of interest. Cars, Tools, Electronics, Crafts, sand play etc. Unfortunately (for me), reading and writing are not one of those, at least - not yet. To get him interested in reading and writing - we started doing some 'fun' projects together. It basically started when I realized that while I had to kinda force him to write his home works, he was quiet happy to write on a chart with sketch pens instead. At Rs. 10/- per chart paper, it was well worth it. His most recent 'task' to me was to put all his projects on a blog for others to see and appreciate him. So here goes!

Project 2 - A to Z

Subject  : English Topic  : English A to Z. A for ... Description  : A to Z with a word, sentence and Picture for each letter. Working  : Plain old. A to Z in the rows. Each letter gets a word, a sentence using that word  (that Arya framed himself)    and also a pictorical representation of that word. Back story : I hear you. "Isn't it just a little late for a Grade 1 kid to be doing A...Z? " Yes and No. First things first - the school focuses on all round development and not super academic. Read - they do not torture the kids to write pages after pages. I also notice he is not super naturally inclined into academics. But no worries. Projects are here to rescue me. I'm totally ok with Arya picking up word formation, spelling in his time. This is my effort to give him just a little nudge in the direction.
